What Goes Into a Custom Dress: A Visual Walkthrough

Commissioning a custom dress is not the same as buying off-the-rack, and the process is more involved than most people expect. From the first fabric swatch to the final stitch, a one-of-a-kind dress typically takes 5-6 weeks and passes through four distinct stages. Understanding what happens at each stage helps you plan ahead and get the most out of each fitting.

## The Four Stages

1. **Consultation & concept** — measurements taken, inspiration reviewed, sketch approved

2. **Toile** — a calico mock-up built to check fit and silhouette before cutting final fabric

3. **First fitting** — final fabric cut and tacked together, adjustments pinned

4. **Final fitting** — hand-finishing, hem, and press, ready for you to take home
