Renting Equipment vs Buying: When Each Makes Sense
One of the most common questions we get from contractors just starting out is whether to rent or buy the big equipment. The short answer is that it depends on utilisation. If you're using a mini excavator more than 80 days a year, ownership starts to pay off. Below that, renting almost always wins once you factor in insurance, maintenance, and idle days.
## Quick Decision Checklist
1. How many days per year will you actually use it?
2. Do you have secure storage and a transport trailer?
3. Can you afford a major repair bill in year three?
4. Is the technology changing fast enough that you'll want an upgrade?
5. Do you have the cash for a 20% down payment without starving other projects?
If you answered "no" to two or more of those, rent it. We keep our rental fleet young and serviced so you get reliable gear without the ownership headache. Call us for a weekly rate if you're stuck deciding.
